The USS Yorktown (CV-5) was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier that served in the United States Navy during World War II, earning distinction as a key participant in pivotal Pacific naval battles including the Coral Sea, Midway, and the Eastern Solomons. The carrier was eventually sunk by Japanese forces in October 1942 during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, but remains historically significant as one of the Navy's most celebrated warships of the early Pacific War.
