The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) was a German self-propelled gun that served from 1940 through 1945 as one of the Wehrmacht's primary tank destroyers and assault guns, and the late variants featured distinctive side skirts (Schürzen) that were added from 1943 onward to provide additional protection against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge weapons. The StuG III became one of Nazi Germany's most widely produced armored fighting vehicles, earning a reputation for reliability and devastating effectiveness on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
