The Nakajima J1N Gekko was a Japanese twin-engine night fighter developed during World War II, entering service in 1943 and serving primarily in the defense of the Japanese home islands against Allied bombing campaigns. It was notable for its innovative oblique-firing cannon armament mounted at a 30-degree angle, which allowed pilots to attack enemy bombers from below and behind—a technique that became influential in postwar fighter design.
