The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a twin-engine fighter aircraft used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, serving from 1941 onwards and earning recognition as one of the war's most distinctive and capable fighters due to its unique twin-boom design and exceptional range. The P-38J variant, introduced in 1943, featured improved engines and systems, making it particularly effective in both the European and Pacific theaters as a fighter, bomber escort, and photo-reconnaissance platform.
