The CSS Virginia was an ironclad warship built by the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War, famous for its March 1862 battle against the USS Monitor off the coast of Virginia, which revolutionized naval warfare by proving that armored steam-powered vessels could defeat traditional wooden warships.
