The Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber used primarily by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II (1941-1945), serving as the backbone of the daylight strategic bombing campaign over Europe and known for its distinctive design, defensive armament, and ability to sustain heavy combat damage while returning to base. The "G" variant, introduced in 1943, featured improved armament including a chin turret and became the most widely produced version, with over 8,600 aircraft built.
