The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engine heavy bomber used extensively by the Royal Air Force during World War II, most famously for the 1943 "Dambusters" raid (Operation Chastise) in which specially modified Lancasters breached German dams using bouncing bombs. The aircraft became one of the most iconic British bombers of the war, serving from 1942 until the conflict's end and continuing in various roles into the post-war period.
